What It Takes To Open a Franchise

Written on November 7th, 2007 by Ryan Lee in Franchise Industry.

The franchising business is one of the fastest growing industries in today’s world. Many come to the line thinking that not too much work is involved here, as one is working under somebody’s perfected system of operation. Others shy away thinking that great amount of time and energy have to be spent to be one’s own boss. The fact is that there is truth in both of them.

When you decide to open a franchise, the first thing that will take much of your time and energy is the process of finding the right franchisor. You have to research thoroughly in your area to see whether the product or service you want to sell is in demand or not. Then you should go through the UFOC of the franchisor carefully and make sure that you understand each and every point.

Next, you have to find the required finance for the project and that will involve a great amount of work. You have to balance your assets and liabilities and look for financial lenders. Many franchisors are member of SBA and they help in finding you a good third-party lender. Then you are supposed to find a good location, unless it is not a home based franchise. (If that’s the case, you’ll need to set up your home office). Many franchisors will help you to find and lease a good property, while others will further reduce your work by offering pre-setup modules that you can buy or lease. Next comes the vital training system. The training is one aspect where you need to submit your full energy and concentration. It will be the backbone of running your business. The next important thing is the job of arranging a grand opening for your franchise.

When you associate yourself with a celebrated franchisor, your unit will be advertised in leading papers, TVs and other media. You do not have stop work for that, but you have to work to get local advertisement. You should oversee whether direct mail flyers are given out or your business is advertised in local papers. Then comes the work of getting good employees. This again is shared by many franchisors while some of them even train a few of your employees. A great amount of work has to be done regarding paperwork such as getting the license, registration and other government approvals. When all these works are done, then you will find that your “grand opening” is grand in the truest sense!
